Let me start by admitting that this title may be a bit misleading. You see, I used the word “questions” – with an s. That infers that I’m going to discuss multiple questions that toddlers ask. Well, that, in fact, is not true. I’m only going to be discussing one. Gotchya!
But seriously. If we’re being honest, there’s really only one main question toddlers ask, and it’s probably the most important one.
Why?
Now, parents (and older siblings) all around the world can easily identify with the annoyance attached to the constant “why???” coming from the sweet mouth of a toddler following just about anything and everything. But I have to hand it to kids for the curiosity and desire for truth that they have.
Maybe I’m getting a little too deep and analytical about a child just wanting to know why s/he can’t eat ice cream for breakfast or why the living room has to be dusted every week, but I really think they’ve got something right here! (Plus, let’s be real, these are legitimate questions I have too.)
Anyways, my point is that if you had a little nugget child following you around all day and asking you why you do everything that you do, say everything that you say, believe everything that you believe…would you honestly be able to give a real answer?
That’s something the Lord challenged me with recently, and my answer was definitely not what I’d like it to be (aka “no”). So His next question was simple: what are you going to do about that?
The answer to that question is also simple (and obvious), but it takes more discipline than I expected. I’ve had to make it a habit to constantly ask myself why and re-evaluate my motivations. From relationships to work to free time and everything else in-between, this is causing me to be so much more intentional with my time. It’s a challenging and continuous journey, but it has drastically changed my life already.
I’m living life on purpose.
Are you?
